Alan Alda is our (science) homeboy
For real though! (Backstory: He was on M*A*S*H! And the West Wing!) I recently came across the fact that the he helped create the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, which initially blew my mind. Even better is the fact that instead of just hunkering down with academics, every year the center funds The Flame Challenge, which is a contest to explain a specific concept in science.
“The Flame Challenge has grown from scientists trying to answer the question of one 11-year old (me) from many decades ago, to tackling questions on the minds of thousands of current 11-year olds from around the world,” said Alda. “I’m in awe of the scientists who can bring clarity to these questions and I’m in awe of the kids who keep the scientists on their toes.”
….new science hero.
This is a video explaining flames that won a couple of years ago (so good!) and the challenge this year that is currently being judged (by 11-year olds OF COURSE!) is “What is color?”
